If Ali was born ten years later

Well history doesn't see it that way. On the contrary few pro athletes served in Vietnam, with the noted exceptions of Bill Campbell, Rocky Bleier the Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Al Bumbry, a Baltimore Orioles outfielder. Who was black by the way.

What does skin color have to do with that running back... was he mistreated?

I really don't know any American Football history, the only Sports History I have any real knowledge of is Hockey, Boxing and MMA, the rest is a total blank to me.

why are we talking about the draft, anyway? it doesnt matter what the reason was. the only way i can see it relate is if we speculate about how good ali would've if he wasnt laid off from boxing for three years because of it

Well for me, I was just saying I believe he would've been an even bigger sports icon and so many promoters would have paid the man whatever he wanted he he not dodged the draft.

That's what I was trying to get across.

The skin colour mattered because he was one of the only athletes to get drafted. Ali would have been another. Back then it did matter what your skin colour was. That's why so many people fought to change the system.

He wouldn't have been a sports icon, he would have been forgotten or killed. Plus if you think how his form dropped because of being unable to fight, imagine what it would have been like if he'd actually gone to Vietnam?

That doesn't mean he would have gone to Vietnam, I personally know people of both white and black who were drafted and never left the US, for all we know he could have Boxed for the Military... he would have still been well conditioned when he got out and picked up right where he left off in probably in ever better form.

That's just something we will never know. However, I think we can all agree on Ali was one of a kind and a special kind of Boxer and Talent, and will we probably wont see again for quite some time.

He couldn't have boxed for the military with a professional license. And he would have likely have been working as admin given his status because even the American government of the 1960s weren't stupid enough to risk getting a gold medal winning, world famous athlete killed in battle.

I don't see why having a professional license would keep him from Boxing, but okay. But I'm sure you get my point... he had options, and yes he could have worked with the Boxing team and he could have stayed in the US, while keeping his conditioning at the same time.

One of the guys I know who was drafted was in perfect health but when he was drafted he got a desk job and never left the US, it's not unlikely that Ali could have opened his mouth and all he had to say is he could help the Boxing talent, and the Military would be dumber than I believe them to be to not to listen to him and let Ali leave the US.

I can agree with that. If not more heat than Ali a white man would've got just as much heat. Isn't it a disgrace and against the law to dodge a draft?

If Ali was born 10 years later he may not have been as dominant with Tyson in the boxing world at the same time.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. However, I still do believe Tyson would have knocked him out, but it would have been around Round 5 or so... not Round 1 like a lot of other Fighters. Ali was a special kind of Fighter, and in my opinion one we have yet to see again.
I like your points, but disagree with Tyson knocking out Ali.

First off, I'm glad you mentioned you think Tyson would knock him out, because I'm tired of hearing (so-called) boxing experts on ESPN boxing or whatever, say "Ali would have destroyed Tyson, look at Sonny Liston" and they compared Liston to Tyson.

Secondly, its almost an insult comparing Liston to Tyson,

- Look at Tyson's hand speed when he was at his prime (training under Kevin Rooney = peek-a-boo style, emphasized elusiveness of movement).

- His head movements trying to fake, jab, go under and counter with a left hook.

Tyson will kill Liston in every category.

My third point, Ali had ONE hell of chin..... this guy fought on after a broken jaw and took punches from Earnie Shavers and came back.

So I think Ali would win, especially when Ali was at his prime years. This guy was too fast and slick.

*EDIT*

Sorry Master Saberoph, I think I reported you by accident. I thought I was pressing the quote button, but pressed the report.

Ali's chin was inconsistent. Henry Cooper Ko'd him in one punch but he was saved by the bell. Ali's jab wouldn't work on Tyson either because his head movement and reflexes were too quick even for Ali. The key to beating Tyson was to fight him on the inside. Frank Bruno had the right idea but he had no stamina.

But Ali was a genius in the ring. He'd probably box Tyson on the inside and win. I'd love to know for sure :p

Ali's chin was consistent. He also took a signature left hook from Frazier and got back up.

Earnie Shavers is considered by many "the hardest puncher". He hit Ali clean and knocked him down, but Ali shook it off and continued and won the fight. Maybe Cooper got lucky and hit Ali on the sweet spot.
